I dont know a single brand whose paints don't dry at a different color then when they are applied. This is why everyone looks at their color sheet and I even apply my own paints to a board first so I know first hand. This was her biggest complaint besides color vivancy?

I have tried wet blending so many times and just not been able to get it right, tried it this evening following your vid here and nailed it first time so cheers very much! Very happy with the results.

Paint, PVA glue, and sand also makes a pretty easy homemade texture paste.

I bought a Vallejo texture paste, I think it was around $10. I barely use it, I make mine with Golden Light Modeling paste, or grout/paster. Usually works better and is easier to make the textures thicker or thinner.

Also for textured bases, thinning milliput down with isopropyl alcohol is easy to whip up in batches. Leave it stiffer if you want to build up a base and sculpt. Add sand, rocks, etc and it's now fully textured!

The companies that make the spackle paste also make a pre-mix concrete patch, I've been using it as texture on bases and terrain for decades. Similar to the spackle but with a fine grit. Cheap as chips and nearly indestructible.

1 cm of paste seems awful thick. It only looks like you are doing maybe 3mm at most.

These are great tips. One tip I like to use is take advantage of your local bulk spice section at the grocery store great bulk basing material for cheep. Mix oregino, thyme = forest leaf litter, Garlic Powder= Dessert sand, Black poppy/seseme seeds = great asphalt for roads things like that

I bought a "natural material" bottle brush from the dollar store, along with a soft greenish-brown paint. I've cut all the bristles off the brush, and mixed some of them with a bit of paint to have a mix of dead and dying "grass" that should easily last me through a few 1000 point Warhammer army.

I buy AK Interactive terrain textures at £8.99 (about 11.36 USD) for 250ml (almost 9 Oz)

The base is what makes the miniature. A great model won't look so good without a proper base. Whereas an average model will look awesome with a great base.

So the lesson is to never go in dry

One thing I might suggest for models you want to have a sense of weight - at the very least on a forest/grassland type of base - is to press the feet into the wet texture paste (a spare set of legs if possible, so as not to wreck the paintjob) where it will stand, and (if it seems appropriate, depending on base size and model pose) a footprint or two leading up to their current position.

For rough earth texture paste, PVA / elmer's glue., paint and dried used coffee grounds.

All I could think of is Nutella...

Curious, at 1:40 you tell the audience to "creating a one centimeter depth of paste", a full 10 mm? That is as deep as the flat part of the tip of that knife, did you mean 1mm, as in the video you did not even get close to that depth of paste on your base.

In the UK the big pots of Vallejo texture past are a great way to get a realistic base with out breaking the bank. You can pick up a 200ml pot for about £12 sometimes less if you go looking on line. They are acrylic based so dry tough and look good as they are designed for scale modelling. Great video as always thank you

i use both, and yeah contrast is more often usefull. Instant colors lacks punch, and it's quite sad since they have colors very close to each other. One saturated and one desaturated would have been great.

When you said the texture paste should be 1cm depth, did you mean 1mm?

I use Golden light moulding past for snow effects & ive been trying liquitex modeling paste. Both you can add water/paint to make it to the consistency you want.

Pre-mixed tile grout has become my go-to basing material for how durable a texture it creates!

Is it weird that I sometimes enjoy basing more than painting the actual model sometimes? Sculpting rock formations out of cork, finding little pebbles and tufts that go with the composition and painting them to match the whole aesthetic, maybe doing some water effects... it really scratches that craft itch. Also, for someone who doesn't like basing, you do it very well!

I've been using homemade texture paste for a few years now. As long as it's in a properly sealed airtight container, it will last just as long as the premade stuff

My fav cheap quick texture is just mixing a bunch of pepper (from the kitchen) to some cheap walmart acrylic paint.

I've found adding PVA glue to the spak filler makes it last significantly longer, I've got a jar that I made 6 months ago that's still good.

Controversial opinion: I prefer the basic simple flat black bases or even better the flat clear base. Your bases look amazing for "show pieces" but for gaming, I don't want a diorama base that will most likely not match with the game/scene setting... But your models do look amazing. Thank you for sharing.

I like using celluclay for terrain. That's what I used for my coal powered lamp and the cowboy music box that I made. You can also cut up the clump grass into smaller pieces. I did that when I made the base for the Madame Nhu figure.that sculpted.

I love basing, but i have almost no practice with it! I have about 200 infantry models to base though, so thank you for the tips and inspiration!

It doesn't look like the model is very secure and shouldn't the base be sealed? They look good though.

Alternative for hobby texture paste, artist texture medium. Golden coarse molding paste is basically the same stuff as all the hobby versions, just with no color added.
